The landscapes of Ladakh, with all their beauty, won't give you a true experience of Ladakhi culture and hospitality. For this, we recommend staying in a local homestay or family-run guesthouse for at least a couple of days. There's no better way to get a sense of the local people than to stay with them.
Leh Town
Within Leh, you get the comfort of staying in a fancy hotel, with the charm and personality of a homestay. In town, there's no better host than Tsezin, nor better food — a combination of local and international dishes, carefully thought out, with local ingredients.
Most suitable for those staying within Leh. We recommend Jade House over any hotel.
Near Thiksey Monastery
A short walk from Thiksey Monastery (perhaps the most beautiful gonpa of Ladakh) is the family-run Ice Guest House. Comfy rooms, amazing monastery views, decent wifi, a peaceful setting and warm, wonderful hosts make this an ideal spot for longer stays.
Terido Village · Changthang
A farmstay retreat in the picturesque hamlet of Teri, in the Rong or 'Gorges' region close to Changthang. Four cosy rooms with views of the Himalayas and the Indus River flowing right beside it. Around 100km from Leh (2 hours by car), ideally located on the routes to Hanle, Tso Moriri, Tso Kar and Umling La.
An excellent base for exploring the Changthang, with the option of day trips to Tso Moriri. Hosted by Tashi Spaldon, a farmer who takes guests to cook, garden, and share stories over tea.
